A WORD FROM THE MANAGEMENT

Why on earth manage a band?

It’s got to be one of the more thankless tasks in the universe. Imagine something that involves adopting a group of temperamental people who expect you to hand them the world on a plate and flushing large amounts of money down the toilet and you get some sort of an idea about the usual experience.

McGraw’s Law, I’m happy to say, have proved to be the exception that bucks the trend. True, they can take an inordinate amount of time to make a decision, due to their innate sense of democracy but that at least one can easily sustain. They are remarkably tolerant and less prone that the average band to the usual bouts of artistic temperament, drunken sorties into the less salubrious areas of town and cravings for Class A intoxicants.

So far, so unusual. Add to this the fact that they come up time and again with catchy, well written songs and you start to get the glimmerings of why I made the decision to get involved.

Normally I spend my musical life producing. This means that at the end of the job I (a) get paid and (b) walk away from the band with a polite thank you and ‘see you around guys’! The management thing is a whole different ball game – it’s a twenty-four hour, seven days a week involvement. There have been times recently when I have risen from my bed in the dead of night to note down an idea, remind myself to do something or have an idea for promotion. It can be wearying. The upside is the satisfaction and joy of gradually enabling the band to move forward - often a lot slower than I or they would wish but that’s the way it often goes I’m afraid. Add to this that I am simultaneously producing the tracks you hear and the workload gets - interesting!

So, dear reader, sit back - jam those cans firmly in your ears, enjoy the fruits of our labours and hope to see you at the next gig.

They/you probably won't even bother to read this!
